So you’re considering something different with your insurance?

Whether you’re shopping for; Auto, Home/Renters, or Life insurance or maybe just wondering what you have now for insurance, you will find out very soon that there are many options out there and the process can be very confusing.  My goal is to help out.

Try not to be guided by the “creative” marketing used by some of the big insurance companies.  Though by law, all advertised offers have to be valid – it’s the qualifying part that can be tricky.   My best advice is to shop around and shop wisely.  If you have to go with a high-risk company, do it only until you improve your situation – do not plan to be with them long term.  Make note of what you are looking for so you know what kind of question  to ask (see "Questions and Tips").

In the state of Illinois, most Insurance companies will run a credit check/consumer score, this will impact the amount of your premium (these checks will not ding your credit score in a negative way).  If you speak with an agent, keep in mind not all insurance agents are created equal.  This is the person behind customizing and selecting your coverage, it should be done with your input - chose them wisely.  Most insurance agent do know what they are talking about and will have good recommendations for you.

Ask to see everything.  Request your quote in writing.  If you are dealing with a company by phone or Internet, request the quote by email.  You should be looking for your coverage’s and limits– this is what it all comes down to.  Do not let all the bells and whistles out-shine your coverage’s.  When dealing with an agent, most of them will explain the coverage’s but if they don’t, request them - it’s your responsibility. Bottom line is, if you are going to pay for insurance you should know what you are paying for.
